The Hopkins County LIteracy Celebration Committee has initiated several local projects to encourage kids to develop a love of reading.
Current projects include the week-long “Ask Me” Button book giveaway in the spring. Volunteers set up book tables at advertised locations around the county. Any student who stops by the table is allowed to pick out a free book. We have also held a few “pop-up” locations during summer 2024. We plan to expand the program in the upcoming year.
Celebrate Literacy also started the Birdhouse Libraries, through the efforts of founder and former chairman Peggy Stirsman. The mini-libraries are now maintained by the Madisonville Woman’s Club. The idea behind the project is that patrons will “take a book and get a book.”
We need volunteers to serve on the Literacy Celebration Committee and help during events. If you are interested, please contact Lindsay Arnett at lindsay.arnett@hopkins.kyschools.us or Lori Harrison at lori.harrison@hopkins.kyschools.us.
