Attendance/Truancy

Attendance Matters

Every day matters. Regular school attendance is one of the strongest predictors of a student's academic success and is one of the greatest indicators of whether a student will graduate from high school. Students who attend school consistently build strong relationships, stay engaged in learning, develop essential life skills, and are better prepared for future college, career, and military opportunities. We understand that illnesses and unexpected circumstances arise, and our goal is always to partner with families to remove barriers, provide support, and help every student be present, engaged, and ready to learn.

In Kentucky, school attendance is not only essential for student success—it is also required by law. Under the Kentucky Compulsory Attendance Law (KRS Chapter 159, including KRS 159.010), parents and guardians are responsible for ensuring that children of compulsory school age attend school regularly, and school districts are required to monitor attendance and address excessive absences. Hopkins County Schools is committed to working alongside families through early communication, intervention, and access to resources to promote positive attendance while fulfilling the requirements of Kentucky law. Our focus is to support students and families, intervene early when attendance concerns arise, and ensure every student has the opportunity to learn, grow, and graduate. Together, we can make every day count.
